Checking In: Seamill Hydro - Ayrshire, Scotland

After travelling the world for the past decade it was time to move back to Pam's home country of Scotland. Despite having had 19 adventurous years in Scotland, sometimes moving back somewhere feels like a new place as you see everything with new eyes. This year we want to spend a little more time focusing on more local destinations.

We booked a nights stay at the luxurious Seamill Hydro in Ayrshire, just a 30-35 minute drive from our house down to the coast.

The Victorian hotel stands only metres from the beach and has dramatic views over the Ayrshire countryside and out over the Clyde towards the majestic mountains of Arran. Over the years the hotel has been extended and adapted, mixing modern parts with the charming old parts. As well as everything we needed the hotel for, it is also open for functions and weddings.

It was a typical Scottish winters day so we relaxed in our plush, spacious bedroom with a large window overlooking the gardens and the view out over to Arran which was partially covered by low clouds, the room amenities were graciously accepted, we had Highland Spring Water in the fridge, a range of English breakfast and fruit teas, coffee and Galaxy hot chocolate, and yummy all butter shortbread.

I enjoyed my hot chocolate as I relaxed in a big soapy bubble bath complete with 'The Scottish Fine Soaps Company' amenities in the generous bathroom which also boasted a double shower.

We then ventured through the large reception area and down past the Hydro Therapy Beauty rooms and went to the gym and indoor heated pool and sauna. The gym was fully equipped and as we are not experts, we were pleased to see many different types of machines that we aren't used to. The equipment was all well cared for and new, we passed a long time in the gym as we watched 'The Chase' from our cycling machine tv screens.

The pool was designed like a Grecian palace, complete with stars twinkling in the ceiling. The pool was large and had an in-built jacuzzi. There were also a steam room and sauna, which on a cold evening was wonderful!

The cosy details from the hotel continue into the restaurants, we chose the Orangery for dinner where we had amazing food from a vast menu. The desserts were utterly amazing too. After dinner we headed to the hotel's second restaurant, the Aura, where we enjoyed the most delicious cocktails at the bar.

After an amazingly comfy and cosy nights sleep on the soft king size bed we headed for what can only truthfully be called the most amazing continental breakfast buffet I have ever had... You were greeted with toast and a jug of orange juice, the cooked breakfast was made to order while you visited the continental buffet as often as you could manage. The continental was like no other... the largest selection of fruit including passionfruit, mix of big juicy strawberries and other berries. The cheese and charcuterie boards were divine and there was a large selection of smoothies and yogurts, amongst the normal foods like cereal and freshly baked pastries.

We had a lovely stay at the Seamill Hydro and will happily come back one time, even if its just for the spa facilities and that breakfast.
