In February 2020 we were headed on a ski trip in Portes Du Soleil on the Swiss / French border. It worked out a lot cheaper to arrive a day earlier than the rest of our family and friends. So, as we were flying into Geneva, Switzerland we thought we would spend a night there and explore the city. We had a wonderful 24 hours in Geneva and the hotel made our stay.
We had looked on Expedia at hotel choices and picked Hotel D’angleterre for location, value and how damn cute it looked. The value was good, because we used our Expedia rewards to bag ourselves a free hotel stay!
The 5 * Hotel D’angleterre is located on Quai du Mont Blanc which is poised on the lake front, and the lake is exactly what you want to see in Geneva, although there are many attractions to see, Jet d’Eau is the famous Geneva landmark, 500 litres of water per second are jetted to an altitude of 140 metres. From the hotel you can also spot Mont Blanc.
The multi award winning Hotel D’angleterre which is part of the Red Carnation Hotel Collection, opened its doors back in 1872 and is renowned as a historical luxury hotel.
Upon entering the hotel, there is a concierge to greet you and take your luggage, at the top of the stairs is the reception, we were warmly welcomed, and the staff were very friendly.
As we arrived around 11am, our room was not ready yet, but the staff were kind to allow us to have a seat in the Leopard Bar and enjoy a complementary hot drink and unlimited mini Toblerone bars.
Our bags were whisked up to our room whilst we were shown into the old fashioned and cute lift that would take us to our floor, which was adorned with hanging pictures in a dimly lit and cosy hallway.
There are 39 rooms within the hotel and 7 types of rooms from the Classic Queen to Presidential Suite. As part of our Expedia rewards, we were treated to a free room upgrade to a junior suite. We couldn’t wait to get in and explore, the suite was massive with a walk-in wardrobe, a large and gorgeous bathroom, a lounge area which had a basket of fresh fruit and chocolates, a writing desk, and a massive bed under a large ostentatious chandelier.
Facing the lake there is the glamorous restaurant Windows, which you can dine in for dinner, afternoon tea and the extensive buffet breakfast. We love a good breakfast and this was up there with the best. We could choose from smoked salmon, an array of cheeses, freshly baked bread, hot food, cereals, fresh fruit juice and smoothies and even champagne. All with the view out across the magnificent lake.
Reception will also provide you with a complimentary transport pass for the duration of your stay in Geneva. This entitles you to free travel on the boats, buses, trams and trains. Reception and concierge will also be able to help with any other queries.
Location: Quai du Mont-Blanc 17, 1201 Geneva, Switzerland
Price: Our stay was free as we used our Expedia Rewards but the stay would have cost £303 for the one night
How to get there: At the airport you can go to the ticket machine to receive a free transport ticket (one journey only) which takes you to the city. The hotel is located on the lake front
