Journey To The South Of France | Nimes & Marseille

8th Jul 2013 - 10th Jul 2013 -

After travelling, we felt that a normal sunny, beach holiday may not cut it for us, so we decided upon a road trip around Europe for 19 days. Here is our story of our trip....

So we left Guernsey in our own car taking the afternoon ferry to St Malo stopping in Jersey for a bit. The ferry was only 2 hours which was good. But then on arriving in St Malo we were to then embark on a whole 14+ drive to reach our first stop of Marseille.

Boat to St Malo

We stopped for a few hours on the road side to have a nap but as it was such a long way we ploughed on....

After 11 hours we driving we stopped at Pont du Gard (although it was meant to be amazing, we didn’t know too much about it, but when we arrived at ticket desk it was over our budget to get in, and we knew we had plenty more exciting things to see and do so we left) and lucky we did cause soon after we stumbled upon Nimes, a wonderful city boasting a marvellous Colosseum which has been restored to its former life. We bought our tickets and climbed up and around this fascinating site. Nimes was lovely to wander around and have a well-deserved drink in. I would really love to go back and would recommend you to go!

We then continued the rest of the way to Marseille, another 2 hours drive, arriving in time for rush hour, but it gave us plenty of time to look around this lovely city, whilst rolling past. Once we found somewhere to park we found the 'Apart hotel Marseille' where we'd booked into for the night, the place was cheap, clean and big. We wandered around the city, watched the sunset over the harbour, had a look at the lovely yachts and had dinner.

We then went in search of Le Bar de la Marine, which was the restaurant used in one of the best films ever made- Love Actually. The setting was not as it was in the film, but it looked really cool and the inside the exact same, I stood upstairs like Aurelia when Colin Firth came to propose to her. It's a big cocktail bar so we had some cocktails.

Marseille

Leaving Marseille the next morning we grabbed a pain au chocolat from a patisserie as you do, and stopped off at the cathedral Notre Dame for great views of Marseille, we also watched aircrafts like the red arrows practising for Bastille day celebrations (in a few days’ time).

We then headed along the coast to Nice....
